Son histoire

Marja Rantanen est une compositrice finlandaise née à Turku, en Finlande, le 29 septembre 1939. Elle est l’une des rares compositrices finlandaises du 20ème siècle, la seule compositrice finlandaise de musique atonale de cette époque.

Ilmari Rantanen, son père, était un sportif de haut niveau en lutte greco-romaine. Il meurt d’une crise cardiaque quand Marja n’a que dix ans. Il avait toujours encouragé sa fille à aller jusqu’au bout de son amour pour la musique et s’asseyait auprès d’elle pour l’écouter jouer au piano. Sa mère, née Rauha Ketola, devient, à la mort de son époux, une rentière tenant les affaires d’une main de fer, et une philanthrope de courage. Elle aide notamment les Juifs …

 

 

Un destin extraordinaire

 Diplômée de l’Académie de musique Sibelius de Helsinki, Marja devient l’élève du compositeur de musique stochastique Iannis Xenakis et travaille, à ses débuts, avec la chanteuse finlandaise Tamara Lund. Marja Rantanen termine ses études musicales à l’Université de Colombie Britannique, à Vancouver, où elle rencontre le scientifique français Jean Maruani.

Marja Rantanen-Maruani received an invitation to become a member of the Brussels-based European Academy of Sciences and Arts for her arrangements on the Kalevala and her composition titled “Impressions of two astronauts.” Marja will be the youngest member of the European Academy and the only Finnish-born composer.
